Marmaduke agreed. He could lord it over the dogs whilst doing Bertie's will. He'd enjoy that.

Bertie picked Marmaduke up and tucking him under his arm, went to the kennels. As soon as they saw him coming they set up an excited clamour which intensified when they saw he was holding Marmaduke.

The rest of the hounds pointed out Marmaduke's favoured status. 'What are they saying?' Bertie asked. Marmaduke translated.

Marmaduke did. And the answer, that they wanted information from him.

It took a little time but eventually Bertie managed to get the full story of the dogs strange behaviour. He was relieved beyond measure that Seagull had not had a bout of colic but had been faking it. He was very touched by the hounds behaviour and ordered a special treat for them all, after informing them that they might be called upon to assist Marmaduke. As an afterthought, he asked them, through Marmaduke, if the Ides of March meant anything.

The dogs discussed amongst themselves for a while, but couldn't come up with anything definitive.
The15th of March had not been a hunting day this, or last, year.

Seagull was delighted to be able to chat with Bertie. She wanted a word with him. She'd noticed some ragwort in the paddock which needed digging up, but the stable boy hadn't recognised it.

Bertie made a mental note to speak to the grooms and stable lads, and take a walk in the paddocks to make sure they could all spot Ragwort and deal with it.

Seagull also didn't like the plastic hoof pick the grooms were using and wanted a new metal one. Bertie made another note.

Bertie did as he was asked.
Shouting "Come back here, you daft cat" he started to run after Marmaduke.
Seagull shied in surprise and Bertie automatically reached up to calm her, so missed where the quacking cat had scarpered to.
He could hear the hounds speaking, as well.

Yes, he would, and Marmaduke would be miserable anyway and definitely no match for the street cats.

Marmaduke, Bertie thought, might have to become a house cat and live a pampered life of indoor luxury. He considered his aunts.

They would have a lot to say as Marmaduke didn't have a pedigree. But his aunts had a lot to say when they came visiting anyway and he never really listened to them. Maybe he could get Marmaduke to eavesdrop on their conversations. He might be able to discover who they were planning to get him hitched to. That would be worth knowing.

In fact, the more Bertie thought about it, the more enamoured he became of the idea. And if he went to visit one of them to enquire about re-housing Marmaduke, he could ask about the Ides of March at the same time and not have to read any more estate journals, although he thought he would finish his grandmother's. That had been interesting.

Towards the time Bertie was planning to retire for the night, his butler appeared.
"I'm very sorry, my lord, but your bedroom floor and carpet are still not fit for use, I've made a bed up for you in the Pearl Room"
Bertie replied "Not the Blue Room, where I was last night, then ?"
"No, my lord, the window will not open if it is shut, or it will not close again once it has been opened. A man will attend to it tomorrow"

The butler left the Library, internally wondering what was going on, now. He was used to some strange things, but the behaviour of the various animals during last few weeks was making him consider if he needed a new position.

Bertie took his grandmother's journals to bed with him and read a few more entries. A few moments into this and he realised why his Uncle Septimus bore an uncanny resemblance to Lord Tamworth.

He had run through everything he remembered and came to a halt. He was reluctant to go downstairs again to look through the records for those dates he couldn't remember. He was just about to turn out the light, when Marmaduke peered around the door, unsure of the reception he would receive.
