'I can't imagine him burning up the dance floor in a club,' Erich nodded.
'Major Bigglesworth' said Von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"He has had his moments," Biggles murmured, neglecting to tell von Stahlein exactly what those moment were. "It doesn't do to take him at face value, as you should know."

At this juncture, the subject of their conversation appeared.
"Afternoon, old boy" He addressed Biggles "And the same to you, Van Stahlein"
"I'm off to the harbour, I think my missing friend may be visiting one of the yachts, I should be back in an hour or so"
At Biggles raised eyebrow "Ok, I've got my bally 'phone !"
Bertie disappeared at a brisk walk.

In actual fact, Bertie didn't have any friends at all on the island. Itv as merely a ruse. A quick conversation with Ginger had revealed that it appeared von Stahlein had a small secret hide out, a finca only five miles from town. He was going to check it out.

Bertie, having made sure his phone was on silent and carefully secured, detoured via the tavern and acquired a decent bottle of mineral water. He set off walking for the finca, but used the back paths as they were more shaded - and quieter - than the direct route.

It took him neatly two hours to walk to the Finca as he lost his way, but eventually he saw it, nestling among an olive Grove.

He settled down, under another olive tree, for some careful observations, he didn't want to be seen exploring too close in case someone else was there.

He suddenly realised that Biggles would be worrying about him. He looked round cautiously, and moved several hundred yards away where he was able to get a signal and tell Biggles what he was doing.

He sent Biggles an explanatory text and then returned to his observation post. Bertie was coming to the conclusion that the finca was currently unoccupied.

He decided that the risk of getting closer could be justified, by pretending he was lost, if he was challenged.

Having carefully studied the lie of the land, and the cover available, Bertie made his closer approach to the finca

He approached the finca from the back. He looked around to see if there was any Iivestock which might raise an alarm.

Apart from a cat, asleep in the sun, Bertie could not see anything likely to bark or squawk in alarm. He continued to his new vantage point.

There was a huge bush. What type it was, Bertie neither knew nor cared. He discovered that he could hide behind it and by parting some greenery gently he could look right through the long windows into the house.

A woman. A large woman, dressed in black. He wondered if she was the owner of the finca or a servant of some sort.

Bertie decided he wasn't finding enough out from outside the finca. He walked boldly to the back door and knocked loudly. He was going to pose as a lost tourist and ask for a drink and directions. He thought he might claim he had turned the wrong way when leaving a night club the previous night. He was sure they'd be bothered all the time by people who got lost after leaving nightclubs. It was that sort of island.

It was the woman in black who opened the door. "Si?" she said, crossly.

Bertie fixed his best smile on his face and in halting Spanish, made his requests.

The woman didn't let him into the kitchen but slowly shuffled to the sink to pour him a glass of water. Bertie looked at the size of the pots steaming on the stove and deduced she was cooking for several people. He noticed some washing on a line which had been concealed by his large bush. There were several shirts drying, in at least two sizes.

There were other little clues too, including the German newspaper which was resting on one of the garden benches to the left off the door. Bertie hurriedly glanced away from it as he heard the sounds of returning shuffling feet.

He thanked the housekeeper kindly for the water and asked if he could borrow the telephone to call a taxi. He mimed his own phone being out of battery. If she let him in, he could see more of the house and get an address to give to the taxi driver.

She led him into a small, dark hall and pointed to the telephone. Bertie strained his Spanish to the limit trying to ask for a number to contact a taxi on.

In the end, the servant, probably getting impatient, took the receiver herself and, after a conversation, put the phone down. Bertie finally understood that a taxi would be here in fifteen minutes and he was ushered out of the door in quick order.

He'd go back and report what he had discovered. He didn't worry his head about why they should be there or what connection everything had with Boris. Thinking was Biggles' province.

Back at the hotel, Von Stalhein had finished his coffee and left. Biggles brooded by the pool.

'You're turning lobster,' Algy said critically, returning from his look out post. 'What gems fell from the lips of that frosty faced Prussian this time?'
