“Time’s up,” Biggles told him. "Algy and Bertie, go and collect that other little parcel." He wrote something on a piece of paper. "Ginger can help me back to the aircraft. We'll see you there."

As Ginger helped Biggles down to the aircraft, Biggles told him to listen carefully.
He had some special instructions for him.

A still tied-up Montague struggled with his bonds. Surely they weren't going to leave him there? He was definitely worried about the Russians. That had not been in the original arrangements.

Algy and Bertie consulted the remains of the map of the labour camp, identified the Kommandant's quarters and left for them, taking some tools which might be needed. Apparently, the last Kommandant had quite a collection of items that he shouldn't have and no one had realised, that, after his drunken death, they hadn't been searched for and collected into a place of safety.

They stared at the floor of what had once been the bedroom. The floorboards were filthy and the remains of a rotten rug lay by the space where a bed had been. Algy consulted the map again. "Here," He said, tapping a board with the crowbar he was carrying. "This should be the place."

It wasn't, but the cache was only a couple of boards away. Algy and Bertie levered away until they had revealed a well wrapped weatherproof box.

'Let's get back to the plane,' Algy ordered, making no attempt to open the box and investigate its contents.

Bertie was only too happy to agree. He was well aware that the Russians, on their own territory, could probably be there before they were expected.

Meanwhile, Ginger had made Biggles comfortable in the plane's cabin and was carefully - but quickly - stowing everything that had been used to make camp.
He wasn't to leave any trace of their presence, but put Montague's impedimenta over the site.

'We're taking him,' Biggles returned. 'He needs to be investigated to see if he's a double agent, or if his bosses are, and that's easier done if he's in London than Moscow.'

Algy and Bertie returned, with their parcel.

Preparations were made for take off, with Biggles in the cabin and Montague secured safely, all the kit had already been returned to the proper stowage, apart from the tools that had just been brought back. The last of the fuel was added to the tanks and the empty tins hidden.

Whilst the camouflage netting was removed and the engines started up to warm them Algy sat in the cockpit, with Bertie and Ginger checking the projected runway - as much as possible for obstructions, they then kept a watch in case the expected visitors arrived early.

Ginger returned from his little errand, and grinned at Biggles, "Yes, the package is in the best place" before he and Bertie went into the cockpit.

With an apparently clear sky Algy took off and headed for home, not quite on the most direct route.

Almost as soon as they had taken off a great explosion was heard. The aircraft shook. Biggles turned an accusing eye on Ginger. “Just how much explosive did you use?” I only wanted you to collapse the entrance to the mine.”

"Not that much !" Ginger replied, "Bertie did suggest I used a lot more, though"

Montague started giggling "We've had the same idea, one lot must have set the other off, never mind, job's a good un"

Biggles turned a reproving eye to their passenger, just as the plane jinked and then zoomed sharply.

He returned to say that there was an unwanted escort, but Algy thought he could loose them in the clouds which decorated the nearby mountains.

There hadn't been any firing - or communications as such. The accompanying planes seemed content to follow, without attempting to force a change of course.

Biggles nodded weakly. 'There are some pretty substantial peaks in those mountains.'

Biggles did not like being unable to see what was happening, but even he had to admit that he was in no fit case to fly. He wondered if he could reach the cockpit and just observe.

At that point Algy came back into the cabin, he wanted a quick conference with Biggles as to the best route to take in the mountains, before running for the NATO base where they were to refuel.
He intended to basically loop around several peaks and valleys, whilst keeping to his approximate heading - hopefully the escort would not want to risk finding some solid clouds, and would leave them to it.

Biggles tried to concentrate on what Algy was saying. Algy, recognising Biggles was woozy from shock, blood loss, pain killers and pain, changed the discussion to a notification of his intentions.

Biggles nodded and authorised them.

Algy’s tactics worked although they had a couple of close shaves. Algy was glad when the base came up on the horizon. He radioed for an ambulance. Biggles would hate the fuss, he knew, but Algy was only concerned with getting him proper medical treatment.

Biggles, who had fallen asleep as soon as their pursuit had been lost, woke as the plane landed.

As Algy predicted, Biggles was not happy to be carted off in an ambulance, but his pain killers had worn off by then so he didn't protest as much as he might have done.

To his surprise. Air Commodore Raymond turned up with Major Charles. Both men were very anxious to see both the papers and the package Montague had been sent to pick up.

Algy handed them over, and shortly after that, Montague too. His interrogation would start on the return journey. Montague was not pleased to be released into the custody of senior officers who weren't his boss.

'I'm sure you will want to stay here for a couple of days until Bigglesworth is fit enough to be flown home,' the Air Commodore suggested.

They did. Algy got the distinct impression that the Air Commodore didn’t want them home until certain things had been resolved.

He also arranged for hanger space - and a top overhaul which Ginger would supervise tomorrow - and then followed the others over to the Officer's Mess.
As he arrived Bertie was already arranging for baths and their small kit to be in the allocated rooms.
