A WAAF produced a gold powder compact in the shape of a leaf. 'Be careful with this,' she warned, 'It's precious to me.'
'Major Bigglesworth' said Von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

An unusual stone was harder. Biggles had vetoed the inclusion of precious gems so no one could enter their mother's engagement ring or other jewellery. Doc Lorton had produced a kidney stone, kept in a small jar, for his contribution.

One of the WAAFs had a necklace made from polished river stones. It was very pretty.

Taffy had a stone he'd found with a hole worn naturally in it. He claimed it was lucky and he carried it everywhere. Ginger had to persuade him quite hard to take it out from his pocket and enter it into the competition.

Time was up for the evening. The men reluctantly dispersed to their various duties. The pilots examined each team's collections, admiring and disparaging the different items.

'Yes,' Biggles decided, 'but a maximum of two items and apply to me in writing giving your reasons for wanting to do so.'

Very well, they decided. All the members of the squadron had appeared engaged and interested. It was working a a distraction from the boredom and worry that they were all subject to. Biggles was pleased that they had decided to hold this competition.

They agreed that the next stage would have to include the remaining items from the treasure hunt list, and some additional ones would be added.
The practical exercise the following afternoon needed some extra planning, the initial task had been to carry the lightest member of the teams around the base, collecting items and answering questions at the waypoints.

The next afternoon didn't quite work out how Biggles had anticipated. It turned out that the WAAFs weren't always the lightest members of their teams and were insisting on carrying rather than being carried. Doc Lorton's scales had been used several times to prove that certain girls outweighed certain men in their team, Tug for example, and Henry. Algy was also being carried. Biggles wasn't quite sure how that feather weight WAAF had fixed things so she appeared to weigh more than Algy but he was quite certain that she had, and from the way Algy was jumping in her and a mechanic's arms, that she was goosing him as they went round the base. At least, he hoped that it was the WAAF that was causing Algy to twitch and not the mechanic.

Toddy came up to Biggles with a puzzled frown. "There might be a problem with some of the coins presented during the hunt yesterday - I don't recognise them"

"We'll, there's quite a few people been to some pretty strange places," Biggles said. "Do you need to recognise them? Or are some tokens from a fairground?"

Biggles was curious. He went along to Toddy's office. There, Toddy showed him what he had put aside. Biggles picked one up and looked it over.

Biggles went out of the squadron office and headed for the group including Ginger. As he strode across towards them, one of the airmen from the gate intercepted him "Sir, permission to speak - the gate sergeant sent me, there is another of those mystery parcels for you, it is larger than the others"

Biggles took the parcel and looked at it. This was wrapped in newspaper, and tied with an old frayed piece of bailing twine.

It was definitely much bigger and heavier than the others. He looked at it with his suspicious feelings slowly being replaced by curiosity. He asked the sergeant of the guard how it had arrived.

A messenger boy on a bicycle. He'd had his cap pulled down so no one had seen him clearly. The accent had been local and there was nothing memorable about his colouring or his voice or his build. He could have been any delivery boy. The bicycle was equally ordinary. Biggles patiently questioned what the other, known, delivery boys looked like so they could be eliminated.

They had varied from the lad who helped at the railway station to a paper boy who had been stopped in the street and asked to deliver.
