The adjutant whispered in Wilks' ear.

"Isn't that cheating?"

'Only gamesmanship.' soothed the adjutant. 'All's fair in love and war.'
'Major Bigglesworth' said Von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

This Wilks understood. He nodded and he and the adjutant walked off to the huts that served as changing rooms.

"No," He decided suddenly. "I don't like it. If we beat 666 we'll do it fair and square. Or as fair and square as anything on a Rugby pitch can be," He amended.

Not that that would make him change his mind. "Put those away and let's go and watch," Wilks advised. "I want to see how Biggles stands up to the rough stuff."

Mainly, Wilks was happy to see, Biggles was flattened by the rough stuff. It was a cold, wet day, and Wilks was enjoying the spectacle of his old friend face down in the mud yet again when he realised how many penalties 701 were giving away in their eagerness to tackle Biggles. 'The cunning blighter,' Wilks ground out indignantly. 'He's doing that on purpose.'

He was even more incensed when Biggles passed to Dora, who lost no time in haring up the field like greased lightning.

The Captain of 701, a very pragmatic man, took his men to task. They were to mark Dora closely and stop making late tackles on Biggles. Sadly for them, they did this by not paying attention to the wingers, especially the one on the left who was old (well, out of his twenties which is ancient in rugby terms) and blind.

It didn't take Bertie or Toddy long to spot this and very soon advantage of the omission was being made. Wilks fumed and yelled a couple of obscenities at the Captain of 701.

Half time arrived with 666 a score ahead. Wilks went onto the pitch to listen to the pep talk from his captain and to contribute his mite.

'How does Bigglesworth find these people?' he grumbled. 'Three old men and a girl should not be running rings around you.'

The captain decided to try to lock down the 666 backs and make this a game about the forwards in the second half, especially as the ball was very slippery in the rainy conditions.

The ref shouted 'time', the men spat out the lemon halves they were sucking (Biggles had no idea where these had been sourced in wartime) and everyone squelched into position for the second half.

'Never mind about jolly old Wilks, sir,' Bertie said firmly. 'Worry about getting the ball to the forwards. We need shorter passes in this weather. The ball's slippery when it's wet.'

Biggles' eye was caught by a delivery bicycle roaring through the gate. The driver pulled up beside him and handed him a square package. "From the hospital, sir" he answered to Biggles look of interrogation "I recognise you from the description, sir" with the hint of a smile, and he was off before Biggles could question him further .
.
He studied the box . It didn't rattle, smoke, spark and it smelled rather pleasantly of sugar. "Lacey" was printed carefully in one corner.
Too interested to watch the play, Biggles hastily tore off the wrapping, to reveal a box of coconut pyramids. His eyes lit up.

The ball exited a scrum and hit him directly between the eyes. It was with great difficulty that Biggles kept his hands on the box and didn't spill any of its precious contents.
