The Chat Thread

Very general discussion about absolutely anything at all, go wildly off topic and chuck stuff about. Chit-chat. Witty banter. Crash air-planes. Bring your own "lemonade"

The Chat Thread

Postby kylie_koyote » 18 Dec 2017, 03:43

Tonight I was talking with my little boy about ‘stranger danger’ and going over the usual scenarios of “don’t get into someone’s car or follow a stranger who says he’s got a puppy or candy.”

And Little A says to me “what would you do if someone says they have a Biggles book they want to show you?” And I was thinking “crap! He’s worked out how to kidnap me!”
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

You inspired me to make carrot cake muffins (no chocolate in the house). Eldest daughter was sent to the village shop to buy cream cheese and came back with dairylea triangles. I've added icing sugar and lemon zest and it is working fine as a topping.

I haven't had a coconut pyramid for yonks, efr. I think I've got some (very well by now) desiccated coconut in the cupboard and a few glace cherries the youngest kismetite missed the last time he went through my baking cupboard. Maybe cooking some can be tomorrow's Christmas task avoidance activity?

Oh dear. That has given me so many ideas. Dare I hope that you will come up with something? A certain dance is deeply etched in my memory, along with Dolores, thanks to you, and I feel you could do something memorable with a coconut pyramid.

Sorry, coconut pyramids are not macaroons. CPs use coconut (there's a surprise) and macaroons are ground almonds. Admitedly my pyramids may flatten out in cooking, and both cause death by sugar, but the differences are immutable.

I did Latin at school but that was a very very long time ago and I was useless, anyway. A local school's classics master used to live opposite us. He spoke 17 languages. "Once you've mastered 9 or 10, he said, the rest were easy. There's no answer to this. He said he'd been to Greece and spoke ancient Greek with a modern accent and made himself understood. Again, we were speechless.

It must be an Aussie dialect thing. In my cookbook they're called coconut macaroons.
I've made both versions, but is only in the last few years the 'French' ones (almond) have been commonly sold in shops. Probably since cooking programs like Masterchef came about, and there was a demand for almond meal.

I've known coconut macaroons and coconut pyramids, too, Tiff. Totally different, but as I don't like coconut I can't comment on which one I think best. It was a long time before I tried the 'French' Macaroons because I had always associated Macaroons with coconut.

Happy Christmas everyone. Ours has been enlivened by all the electrics failing last night, just when we'd got rid of the visitors and were slumped down to watch the MR James programmes on TV. Mr EFR finally isolated it as the kitchen ring main, and now everything else is working,
apart from anything in the kitchen
Such as
Cooker, fridge,freezers.
Raw sprouts, anyone?
