Bab's "Sweeps the Desert" Lysander

Bab's "Sweeps the Desert" Lysander

Postby Babanango » 16 Dec 2017, 20:53

My submission this time round will be the Westland Lysander that flies the Air Vice-Marshall into the oasis on the next-to-last page of Sweeps the Desert.

2676

The Airfix-72 kit I'm using is quite simple. There is no cockpit to speak of, and the figures provided are simply head-and-shoulders that glue onto the flat surface of the "cockpit". The landing gear are equally simple. No separate wheels. They are cast onto/into their housing. So this should be a quick build.

2679

The instructions call for Dark Green, Earth, and Duck Egg Blue, but as this is a desert version, I'm replacing the Dark Green with Middlestone, and the Duck Egg Blue with Azure. I'm using Humbrol's Earth and Middlestone for upper surfaces, but Testors Model Master RAF Azure for the underside. Humbrol's recommended RAF Azure is far too dark.

It seems to be such a lot of fun!!

Excellent! This should look great in a desert scheme.

All the Christmas shopping is done, with a day to spare before Christmas Eve, so I got a start on the Lysander today. I'm going to have to restrict myself to one hour, one day a week, or this simple kit will be completed in just a day. I have the wings painted and the fuselage is together. You can see in this photo the great detail included in the "cockpit". I suppose I could have opened it up and built my own cockpit, but that's more work than I need to do during the holidays!

Another day working on the Lysander, and I've got the fuselage painted.

I haven't paid much attention to the Lysander in the past couple of weeks. My wife unfortunately broke her leg while taking the dog for a walk, and I've been being the attentive husband. (She was going down a snowy hill when the dog bolted after a deer. Down she went and "crack").

But here is the progress so far. I semi-painted the crewmen today, what little there is of them. As you can see they look as if they are standing in quicksand. Now to glue them in place, and to begin on the undercarriage.

Ouch! I hope she is doing OK now. How dreadful for her.

I like the little people - they're very funny, being only half there.

Sorry to hear about your wife, Babs. I hope she recovers quickly.

The crewmen look most peculiar being only half there!

Thanks for the good wishes, and I will pass them on to her. She'll be home for three months, but will be working from her laptop. She's already bored out of her mind!

Does she have a taste for making things? Patchwork quilts? Embroideries? Parquetry?

She has my sympathy. Like the others I hope she has a good recovery. Thanks for showing us your little half-cut crew members. I can't wait to see them in their proper place.
