What Would Biggles take in an emergency?

Postby Frecks » 17 Oct 2017, 19:15

Following on from the comments elsewhere I thought it would be interesting to think of some unusual things for the chaps to take with them in an emergency.

A compass, a handkerchief, and a gun.

"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

Phone and debit card. Everything else can be replaced. Again.

Swiss Army knife. Everyone knows that if you have one of these you can achieve miracles.

Oh, his passport and log books, if applicable.

Biggles would try to hang onto his address book. That would be irreplaceable.

His cigarettes! Stashed in every corner and hideyhole.

Case in point, from Takes it Rough...

‘This Robinson Crusoe stuff is going to be a bit draughty,’ sighed Bertie, as Algy started to hand things out of the Kestrel. First came the small carton containing the emergency rations.
‘What’s in that?’ asked Rod, curiously.
‘Biscuits, a couple of cans of bully beef, tins of butter, jam, sugar, cheese, condensed milk and tea.’
‘What’s the idea of humping that round with you?’
‘Call it force of habit. It doesn’t take up much room. We sometimes find ourselves in queer spots, with no restaurant round the corner; not normally in this machine, but on long-range jobs. As it happens this is a case in point. Algy, you’ll find a hundred box of cigarettes in the pocket by my seat. I’ll have them. And the haversacks with our small kit. No reason why we shouldn’t wash occasionally.’ Biggles threw Rod a smile. ‘We always keep civilized as long as possible.’
‘Want the binoculars?’ queried Algy, from the cabin.
‘Yes. They might well come in handy. And we’l have our pistols out of the magazine with a few clips of bullets.’
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

I had to pack in a hurry earlier this summer. The paramedics sent me upstairs to get something on my feet before getting into the ambulance and I took the opportunity to fling a couple of things into a bag.

I packed my contact lenses (I was not well enough to put them in for days)
My reading glasses (useless without my contact lenses)
My full charged tablet (useless because there was no WiFi at the hospital)
A pair of clean knickers and socks. ( Wasn't well enough to get dressed for several days.)

I would have packed more, but I got hustled out by the paramedics at that point, so my score is 0 useful items.

Biggles does much better than me.

Biggles has the experience and would not be in as much pain as you were. When Mr. Frecks was rushed into hospital I was told he was being kept in so took night things etc. only to find that they did not have a bed for him so he was being discharged - he came home in a taxi in his pyjamas :?

Depends on the nature of the emergency. The good old handkerchief seems pretty multipurpose. Something to cut with and make fire.

I think there are two possible questions here.

One answer to 'What would Biggles take with him in an emergency' is that he would take his emergency response kit ie his pre-packed bag containing food, cigarettes, wash bag and clean shirt, like KK quoted from Takes it Rough. These are items that he had had time to think about and acquire, like the contents of the First Aid box in Forms a Syndicate.

The second way of viewing the question 'What would Biggles take with him in an emergency?' is to think of him in an emergency situation with nothing prepared. If Mount St was burning down around his ears, what would he grab to save? His wallet? His scrapbooks?

When Mr. Frecks was rushed into hospital I was told he was being kept in so took night things etc. only to find that they did not have a bed for him so he was being discharged - he came home in a taxi in his pyjamas

I made a similar packing mistake, years ago. I dropped my baby son on his head and the now ex Mr Kismet rushed him to hospital. I very calmly finished putting the eldest Kismetite to bed, rang a neighbour to babysit and packed a bag suitable for keeping me going through an all night vigil. Baby Kismetite was completely unphased by his head being the wrong shape, and went peacefully to sleep in the hospital, it being well past his bedtime, with only minor objections when the nurses woke him up and shone lights in his eyes to check for concussion (there was none) every hour. After a couple of hours, I thought I might as well go to sleep as well, and that was when I realised I'd brought no sleep things with me, only things to keep me awake.
