Ginger's First Name?

Postby von Zoyton » 06 Apr 2014, 11:56

In Black Peril when we first meet the Ginger one Biggles calls him Ginger as a handle without knowing his real name.
Ginger says "enough of that my name is Hebblethwaite."

I am sure later he is then Ginger Hebblethwaite.
What was his real name? Or did old WEJ gloss over that one?
Quick! Untie us before they realise you're not a God, you're just an American. (From that film!)

George Hebblethwaite Jnr [i.e. same name as his father...George Snr]. ;) :D

He's from the North so wouldn't that be 'Young George' rather than 'Old George' ? Or possible La'al George (little George).

Yes George for me too - it would make his signature much easier if his real initial was G.

Yes, you've found me out Jenny & Kismet, haha. I was using my trusty 'English to Geordie' translator...a fun thing I found on the internet about 10mins ago. :D
I can't find an English to 'Smettleworth, Yorkshire' one handy.

P.S. I'm pretty sure I could not pronounce this in a fair dinkum way though.

I'd love to hear you try: it would be like one of those drinking games we used to play with tonguetwisters.

And I misremembered. Babelfish (Hitchhikers as you rightly say) is a proper translation site. Babel Sheep is the Cumbrian translater.

Quite true...there's no way I could try it, unless I had a couple of tipples 1st. We have a French friend & his renditions of 'Aussie slang' are hilarious [i.e. G'daaay mate etc]. :offtopicgreen: Oops, starting to rock the boat & derail the train again.

P.S. Ah, I did get a link for 'babelfish' translation when I googled it, but my 'safety' net search thingy went ballistic & told me it was an unsafe site or spam, or some such thing...now I know it's ok. Cheers.

I'd go for George as well, it was a very popular working class name at the time, I have a grandfather born 1873 and an uncle born 1904 with that name(both born in Lancashire so good northern stock :D ) - it's back in vogue again too, I now also have a grandson called George.

Ginger's first name is Ginger... of course... please...
‘Is Algy back?’
‘Yes; he was in the Mess having his dinner when I came out. He said something about not letting stray Huns interfere with his meals.’
‘He wouldn’t,’ replied Biggles bitterly.

Am rolling about with laughter. Kid 1 comes tearing in asking what is so funny. I try to explain. He shakes his head and comes up with 'ginger beer is no good for you because it contains alcohol.' Then leaves the room.

I've always maintained that Ginger's first name is Habblethwaite, because in Black Peril he says to Biggles "Not so much of the Ginger, my name's Habblethwaite".

Everyone else said that this was a misspelling of Hebblethwaite and that WEJ later changed it, but I think it's Habblethwaite because when introducing himself to his hero Biggles, wouldn't Ginger be more likely to use his first name rather than his last?

Although...Habblethwaite Hebblethwaite...no wonder he preferred Ginger

But once he lost his Yorkshire accent, they discovered it was Hebblethwaite.

He probably had such a thick Yorkshire accent it was Abel Thwaite all the time. They do drop their 'h's'.

It does 'roll off the tongue' mellifluously, does it not? [I've always wanted to use that word, lol...a nice 'visual' word that I may have picked up from WEJ].
