A brief history of the Biggles Forum

Postby von Zoyton » 06 Sep 2013, 22:28

Ok so I decided there needed to be a proper forum for Biggles and made it about 2003.
The forum software always has been phpbb (http://www.phpbb.com/) as I personally think it is the best forum software.

  • The free first host was Galacforums, they went bust.
  • One of the versions was hacked and destroyed with Galacforums (I assume they had security issues).
  • Then I made another with freephpbb3hosting.com, they went bust.
  • Then Freepowerboards which it was with for a very long time indeed.
  • Then "Yukky" forums (yuku.com) recently which was not a nice layout and not phpbb, but that was because Freepowerboards was taken over. All our data was transferred to that host and they would not let us have it back.
  • Now April 2013 here, for good! This is the Biggles Forum on a paid for host for the first time.

(there may have been a couple more, but I really forget)

There are members still from those early days, which is very nice. And lots of new exciting members also.
Hopefully one day all the Biggles fans in the world will be here!
Quick! Untie us before they realise you're not a God, you're just an American. (From that film!)

Top marks for persistence, VZ :yay: :claphappy: :cheers2:

And all the remaining Biggles fans in the world who are not here yet, more fools they - they should learn to google ;)

At one point I was almost able to setup the forum blindfolded I did it so much! Free hosts, who'd have 'em

Sort of have to say that when ones hosts keep pushing up the daises.
With all those goes we should have every fan on board!

I may be biased  but I really do think this is the best. Other forums about Biggles have come and gone and the ones that still appear do not have a great deal of postings or interaction. A lot depends on the layout. This is easy to read, easy to find things and with the quote button you know exactly what people are commenting on. Not to mention the fact that the fanfics really are the best. 8-)

Well I always wanted to use the phpbb software as I have always considered it the best and most user friendly.
The layout of the actual sections here came from tweaking the forum over all those years, but my aim right from the start was to make it user friendly.
Also if one keeps at it eventually the forum gets known, and hopefully famous not infamous!

But actually the main inspiration for the forum 'attitude' was Biggles himself. I expect as the character shaped me as a kid I wanted the forum to follow the same sort of Biggles values. :)

Actually the biggest thank you should goto Spitfire666, if it was not for her we would still be at the free host, and the last free host: Yucky forums. I was in Indonesia at the time of the Yucky Debarcle or Yucky Gate  and was just going to put up with it. It was with motivation and support from Spitfire666 that the start if this Bigglesforum.net came about.

well, thanks VZ and S666. I'm curious - what other biggles forums are there? the only other I've ever been able to find was a yahoo group.

I went to the museum and saw a Van Gogh painting. Underneath it said "Loaned anonymously."
I went to the front desk and said, "I’d like my Van Gogh back now, please."

As has been pointed out they come and go. Personally I don't know of any others right now. The thing with this forum is that it has never been missing (for long) since being made.

I think we had lurkers for many years who decided that the time had come to join once the forum went 'professional' :D

What a horrible thought :!: I have pushed that ghastly screen out of my mind  The time it all happened was the worst time for you, VZ. You would have made a new forum for us when you got back to the UK, but people were running away at a rate of knots, so there would not have been many left by that time. Very glad I was able to help. :hellochap:

I do not know of any other active Biggles Forums. How many members does the Algy Chronicles have? Are they all different members or are there a cross section with the Biggles Forum?
