And you guessed right about being hacked. Although not YABS but another site on the same domain which made my provider take everything offline.

Site now completely rebuilt from a local backup so 100% clean. Only piece turned off is the list of updates as it's reporting every image in the database as brand new.

Not very active in this forum (I know, shame) but anything awry on the site email me at yabs@isambard.com.au. Will try and fix/update. At present the only updates are when my collection extends with another purchase. Recently just the latest Red Fox editions as nothing exciting coming up at eBay.

‘He wouldn’t,’ replied Biggles bitterly.

Hurrah! Love your site. Thanks for popping in to let us know it's back online.

I don't mind Algy's mustache. It's not my favorite illustration by a long shot though. I didn't care for one of the graphic novels that illustrated him with a full beard! Biggles would have a fit. "Salvage Dump" indeed.

Yes I do not think WEJ liked the good guys in beards although some of the baddies had them.

When the boys were in uniform there was no choice. No beard.

Yes, I have to say I'm ambivalent about the moustache, but that stubbly, untidy, red beard was quite, um, scruffy? [to say the least]. Was that in the Chappal Wadi graphic novel perchance?

Here's an image from "The Wotan Sword" showing Algy with a full beard. Oddly, it's just in the beginning. He must have shaved before they left on their mission because after this part he just has the mustache.

That's a mystery. Probably on the same drugs they were doing when they put Bertie in a dress or made Biggles strip to his skivvies and cover himself with engine grease.

Can't look at it. It's too painful. There's some serious competition, but I think that tops the worst illustration ever chart.

I know, Kismet. Someone has said this before but I'll say it again, twice. Why? Why? At NO point did WEJ EVER give Algy a red moustache and beard, so the illustrator of this abomination can't even plead interpretation. Words fail me! :toomuchcoffee:

It would not have been so bad if they had kept to that illustration all the way through but why draw that and then have Algy looking quite different in the rest of the book. I always think of Algy as fairly round faced with slightly long fair hair and freckles as that is how WEJ described him in the first place and then "Fair and freckled" in Orient. I do not think WEJ ever said anything else about his physical appearance.

I cannot recall a healthy, boyish face perhaps it was in Condor or Flies Again. I think Algy has an air of slightly bored humour in Spitfire Parade and Bertie has something similar in Comrades in Arms.

also slight, boyish, Small ,delicate, girlish hands....
The various early descriptions sometimes strike me as being very feminine, but are probably meant to be young. The kid before his voice breaks and he needs a shave.

I wonder if they were based on someone he knew?

I think the early descriptions of Biggles would be based on more than one person WEJ knew. I cannot think he was trying to make Biggles feminine just emphasise his youth and vulnerability at the time. I do not think Algy can have been extremely handsome if he had an expression of permanent surprise on his face - I have never been quite sure what that meant. I love Ginger's frank, alert, freckled face in Black Peril - that just describes him nicely ;)

I have to say that I have always imagined Algy would be quite good looking. And possibly with a touch of aristocratic dignity, gentlemanly-ness and charm as he grew up. In Terai, he is praised as such, but admittedly not for his looks but his manner.

Well you cannot argue with the long hair, dirty uniform and permanent expression of surprise on a freckled face - that might make for a good hearted cheerful companion but I do not think it is a description of an aristocratic young man with charm, grace or any dignity.

I think of Algy as being pleasant looking, but a little untucked. Maternal fingers would be itching to straighten him up, flatten his hair, make him sit up straight....
