Christmas in Mount Street

Christmas in Mount Street

Postby Fairblue » 01 Dec 2013, 22:53

A festive tale. No rules.

************

Algy struggled up the stairs, dragging the Christmas Tree behind him, leaving a trail of pine needles.

"YOUCH!!!!!"
Petroffsky beamed. 'Now you may be certain of seeing me soon,' he declared. 'Au revoir. Remember, my rifle is at your command.'
'And my chocolate is at yours,' returned Biggles, smiling. 'Goodbye for now.'

"Don't be a wimp" Algy called through the branches of the tree. "And go out to the taxi and get that box of decorations."

Biggles sat smoking, watching Algy struggle to insert the tree in its pot so that it stayed upright. He didn't offer to help. "I hate Christmas," he muttered.

Just then Bertie bounced in, dressed to the nines in an outlandish costume. "I've just been asked to play a Christmas fairy in the Scotland Yard Yuletide benefit for underprivileged aeronautical offspring", he announced gaily.

"Biggles," Algy protested, "where's your Christmas spirit!"

"In the corner cupboard, I trust," replied Biggles grimly.

Berties wings sagged and his wand trailed on the floor. 'Is there nothing we can do to cheer you up?' he asked looking forlorn, 'and get you into the jolly old festive spirit?'

"Oh, for heaven's sake" Algy sighed exasperatedly and went over to the corner cupboard and picked up the whisky decanter. "Have a dram. It just might get you into the right mood."

Some three glass later, Biggles had mellowed enough to help Algy to make the tree safe enough for all the baubles and presents Ginger was determined tie on to it. In fact, Algy had even started to hope for convivial festivities, when Biggles turned to him, suddenly anxious. "Algy, your mother isn't coming this year is she?"

I went to the front desk and said, "I’d like my Van Gogh back now, please."

'It's quite alright' added Bertie affably, 'I can always find somewhere to park myself for a night or two. She can have my room'. Biggles stared at Bertie in his boots, trouser legs rolled up twirling his wand and wearing a fairy costume and if it hadn't have been for what the papers would have made of it, could cheerfully have strangled him.

Feeling himself outnumbered he grudgingly gave in. "Well, she is your mother, but just for two nights - but NOT Christmas Day. she should spend that with your father." He took another gulp of whisky vaguely aware he was doing what he vowed he'd never do all those years ago, use alcohol as a prop. But Algy's mother was a real provocation, he reasoned to himself.
