Eventually it seemed to her that the water was now running clean. She wrung it out as best she could and looked for somewhere to place it to dry.

No where near the fire, she decided. She'd put it on the little rack over the bath she dried her own undies on. The thought of Biggles' vest being in such close proximity to her own made her feel very raunchy.

She felt so giddy over this that she decided a little glass of sherry was in order, even though it wasn't a Sunday.

Biggles, meanwhile, was treating himself to a large sherry before going to one of his godsons' nativity plays. He didn't know how he'd been so careless, but he'd definitely said he would attend, and he was a man of his word.

He arrived far earlier than he had intended. Traffic was light and the taxi had hit green lights all the way. The parents of little Neil spotted him and went over to him for a quick chat.

Biggles made appropriate replies and, prepared for the worst, sat on a hard wooden pew.

Neil, peeping out from behind the curtains spotted him. "Uncle Biggles," He yelled at the top of his voice. "Next time you shoot someone can you take a photo?"

A number of curious eyes turned Biggles's direction, but the vicar came out at that point and all eyes obediently swivelled to him.

A class of children dressed as angels trouped on and sang Hark the Herald Angels. Older members of the audience breathed a collective 'ahhh.' Some younger members fixed gimlet gazes on the choir. Biggles presumed these were parents who knew their children. There was a certain amount of scuffling in the back row, Biggles was amused to see, and a few glares from their teacher at them.

Biggles found the whole episode as painful as he had imagined. He was fond of Neil, but in an abstract way. He sent him money to school and remembered his birthdays, but would be hard put to it to name Neil's favourite colour or what sport he played or what his hobbies were.

He derived a certain amount of amusement from the Virgin Mary hitting Joseph over the head with the doll representing the Baby Jesus, and the Innkeeper who announced there was plenty of room at the inn, but itched to march onto the steps to insist the shepherd with the snotty nose used a handkerchief.

It was finally over. Biggles was itching to go but realised he would have to stay to talk to Neil. He dug his hand into his pocket. He knew enough about little boys to know that Godfathers were considered to be a source of extra income and he had no wish to be diminished in Neil's eyes. A tenner, he thought, should cover it.

A tenner was munificent. Neil informed him it would be spent on something Biggles had never heard of but understood would provide Neil with many bragging rights. He shook his hand, declined the hopeful offer of a snifter somewhere from Neil's father who was hoping to avoid participating in bedtime and made his escape.

Algy had no sympathy. He wasn’t going to tell him either that the last person to wear the suit had had glitter thrown all over him .

Biggles slept well that night. He now had the right vests for the British winter, he had done his duty at Neil's Nativity, no glitter had come his way for quite some time, his aunt wasn't going to visit them this Christmas so he was full of Christmas spirit.

Until he saw the costume. "I am not wearing that," He told Algy flatly. "It looks as though the last occupant rolled in glitter. Loo! It's even in the beard. And it's pink."
