"I'd hardly call it pretty," Fliss remarked, tickled pink by Bertie wanting to see her again. "It's a flying cap, same as yours, and it doesn't fit properly because we have to make do with the smallest ones they've got in the stores."

'It must be made pretty by what's underneath it, then,' Bertie declared extravagantly. All the soppy bits ruining a good film were coming in useful now.

Fliss's train could be seen puffing slowly into the station, so after hurriedly confirming that he could reach Fliss through her uncle, who was a doctor, he put her on it and lifted Towser up to wave goodbye with his paw. Then, whistling very cheerfully, he drove back to his Squadron. When he entered the Mess it could be seen that he had a distinct spring in his step.

Bertie decided to plan his move for arranging the Sunday duty swap with care, he didn't want to mess up his chances.

Fliss, tucked up in her Ladies only carriage was happy. The perfume her uncle had sent her was just as effective as he'd said it would be. It had been lovely to have so much attention from the boys. Fliss lost herself in a very happy day dream.

Bertie, meanwhile, had consulted the Duty roster. Algy, unfortunately, wasn't free having to go to London with Biggles to the Air Ministry. He checked what Tug was doing. The favour Tug owed him was a big one. He had pranged his Spitfire while trying to win a bet with Tex that he could land the craft with one arm literally tied behind his back. Bertie had arranged for it to be mended without Biggles' knowledge, as one more episode would have had him in serious trouble.

Tug wasn't in the Mess building, nor sitting in the chairs outside.
Bertie asked "Anyone seen Tug in the last five minutes ?"

No one had. Bertie shrugged. He would rather have settled it now, but he'd see him at dinner later.

In any case, re-arranging the duty roster needed to done discretely, otherwise Biggles was prone to ask questions.
However, given the not-so-gentle-ribbing that Bertie was being subjected to, that might be a moot point !

Biggles, of course, noticed and the next morning he collared Algy in his office.

"Bertie seems to be extraordinarily chipper," He remarked, "and from what I'm hearing, it's not because he's won the pools."

Algy grinned too. "It is surprising," he admitted. "I just hope he doesn't do anything foolish."

The two of them exchanged a quick look, but were interrupted by a knock at the door.
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."

Tug and Bertie stood there.
"Ah, where's Toddy ?" asked Tug, Bertie looked slightly uncomfortable but nodded, "we need to see him"

Biggles looked slightly suspiciously at the pair, "He went to see the OC for the WAAFs, but he should be back momentarily, Can I help, instead ?"

"Er...it doesn't matter, sir," Bertie said quickly, before Tug could open his mouth. "We'll catch him later."

"Nonsense," Biggles said briskly. "He's a busy man, as I am, so now you're here you can tell me what it is."

Tug and Bertie looked at each other for a long moment.
Algy was trying not to grin and avoided Biggles' eye as he had worked out what was afoot.

Biggles said "I'm waiting you two, spit it out !"

Bertie took the bull by the horns "I would like to exchange Duty with Tug on Sunday and for me to do his turn on Wednesday, and furthermore I would like a 24hr pass off bass on Sunday"
At Biggles looking at him, Tug agreed that was the case.

Biggles didn't dare look at Algy. He bit his lip as he tried to look solemnly at the two officers standing before him.

"I've no objection to the swap," He said evenly, "But I'm afraid a 24 hr pass is out of the question just now. The enemy are planning something. Be back at midnight, Bertie, or you'll be Officer of the Day for the rest of the month." He smiled to take the sting out of his words, but Bertie knew Biggles meant it.

Bertie and Tug about turned and left, shutting the door behind them.

Biggles looked at Algy "Well, that was an unexpected development, I hope he has a good day on Sunday and we have a quite one"

Toddy rapped on the door and entered quickly.
"What's got you two grinning like Cheshire Cats ?" he enquired.

Bertie planned on using the train and saving his fuel ration for a special occasion.

Bertie had already checked the timetable, and gave Toddy the details of where he could be contacted whilst he was away from Rawlham.

Toddy arranged for one of the tenders and a driver to drop Bertie off at the station, so he could catch the earlier train.
