This was fun. There was the same sense of camaraderie and belonging that he got on an aerodrome.

All too soon, they were back at Port Madoc, to find a very busy station.

Allan let him shunt on an extra carriage for the last train of the day - an unexpected coach party had arrived.

Bertie returned reluctantly to Merioneth later that evening after having had what he called a 'spanking day."

This rather shocked Lady Lacey when he told her, then she grew thoughtful.

Before he had left Port Madoc, Allan had given him the Lodge number and told him to mention his name when ringing up to make an appointment to meet the works manager for a tour and talks about the maintenance any locomotive and the rolling stock required.
Bertie agreed to make the call the following morning.

After having a bath and changing for dinner, Bertie reported back to Lady Lacey, in some detail - but not everything - about his trip to Port Madoc.

Lady Lacey didn't have a particularly high opinon of Mr Garraway, but listened anyway, before asking more questions.

Bertie replied that he would be arranging to see the Works Manager, about the maintenance required by a railway system, the following day.

Unfortunately for Lady Lacey Fortescue had other ideas. Putting aside his natural loftiness and sense of his own importance as the butler, Fortescue had been in conversation with the gardener about their new duties. Both men decided they'd had enough. The Butler had been offered a new position in the Household of the London House of the Duke of Hastings and the Gardener had found a job working for the Parks Department of Cardiff Council. They handed their notices in, effective immediately.

Only if they weren't involved th that danged, dangerous train thingy, the gardener told his Lordship.

"What train thingy?" His Lordship asked, a bit perplexed. He hated domestic upheavals.

Bertie thought that was a much better proposition. The Butler and the gardener agreed on a five day reprieve.

Lord Lacey liked the idea of a high level railway line for the view. 'Important to see if the Welsh are going to attack. It'll be like castle walls. Better hire another couple of lads for the digging.'

Bertie had a very hearty breakfast the next day, and after making his phone call, set off for Boston Lodge.
He enjoyed the drive, turning over in his mind the list of questions he needed to ask.
Eventually, he found the side turning that had been described to him and parked by the side of the road, as suggested he asked the toll keeper for more directions and was sent up a narrow set of slate steps.

There was the engine from yesterday but another, a very strange looking, one caught his eye and he walked over to look at it.

The driver, cigarette hanging from his lips, looked him over. "This is Merddin Emrys, a double Fairle and Dukes is over there, you need to see him first" Evan watched Bertie cross the yard. Then turned to the three kids who were approaching, "OK youse lot, git polishing ..."

The kids polished away. After a while, it was noticed that they were waxing the brasswork and brassoing the paintwork.

Bertie made a note of a few choice phrases and recognised them as ones Taffy had used in the war. He felt quite nostalgic for a moment.

Taffy had always said that you can't actually swear in Welsh, but you could have a wonderful turn of phrase, and Evan was employing some of the better ones.

The works manager had a long list of things that had to be done to keep engines in safe working order, especially the boiler certificates.
Bertie also talked to Arthur, John and a number of volunteers on most of the same subjects for carriages.

Paul came back and said I've arranged for you to see the permanent way gang in action, I'll put you on the train and the guard will let you off at the right place. Luckily for you the S&T gang are nearby to PW and will also explain what they do.

Bertie was beginning to feel overloaded with information - and how much it cost - to run a railway. He was almost convinced that he didn't want a whole railway, just the working engine and a place that would let him drive it.

The more he thought about it the more he was convinced that he did only want an engine. Tearing up the estate would cause huge problems and he wouldn’t be able to be there all the time to deal with anything that dropped up.

Now having decided that much of the situation he was pleased, but it still left sorting out two things - firstly Lady Lacey's railway ambitions and secondly somewhere he could keep an engine, that would be maintained for him, a bit like the livery stables arrangement he used to have near to Rawlham during the war.

He decided that the best way to deal with Lady Lacey was to keep Lord Lacey in the loop, particularly with regards to costs. The butler and gardener threatening to leave should stiffen Lord Lacey’s resolve. As much as he hated domestic disputes, Bertie knew that Algy’s father hated having new people around him.

As to where he could keep an engine, well, he guessed he’d have to go back to Chedcombe to sort that one out.
