He'd have to check k that one out, he thought. He was going back tomorrow, anyway. He could take a detour through the Home Counties on his way back.

He would have another look at the lists both Allan G and Alan P had given him, listing the mostly fledgling preservation societies, paying particular note to those with decent lengths of track and plans for the future.

The more Bertie thought about it, the more he didn't want to go it alone but to be part of a bigger group. He wanted the camaraderie and friendship as well as a steam train of his own.

Bertie remembered that Alan Pegler had said that most of these preservation societies were concentrating on standard gauge, so being able to provide an engine - one of the more expensive items - would be a great way of being involved.

His mind made up, he returned to Merioneth to find Lord and Lady Lacey, the butler and head gardener creating a scale model of the grounds with added, high-level railway. Much to his astonishment, they were all in perfect accord.

The argument started again when it was clear Lady Lacey expected the gardener to build the track. "You've nothing else to do," she told him, "after you've dead headed a few roses."

The gardener negotiated two extra boys to help him with the heavy work, as he wasn't as young as he used to be. Lord Lacey agreed and to Bertie's amazement, the gardener then seemed confident that the project was achievable.

What Bertie and Lord Lacey didn't know was that the head gardener's brother worked on the Permanent Way as a ganger and was going to do a bit on moonlighting.

The gardener started to calculate what materials would have to be bought for the project. He seemed entirely competent at this. Bertie wondered just how much gardening he actually did.

After breakfast the following morning he set off back to London, having planned his route to call into several of the preservation groups on the way. He had made a couple of calls the previous afternoon and evening to try and ensure whoever he needed to see would actually be available.

He was still wondering if being the anonymous sugar daddy for one of the societies was the way to go, because it certainly seemed a viable idea.

He'd have to think about that a bit longer. He was beginning to realise it took up a lot more time than he thought. He hadn't had chance to go riding at all these last few days.

Bertie started to consider how much time he wanted to give to his engine. He'd been warned that it was a money and time intensive passion, but there were other things he wanted to do. There was his job, which often took him away for weeks at a time. There was hunting, and boats, and golf.

Bertie remembered another point that Alan Pegler had mentioned, which was a bit like owning racehorses, he could form a syndicate and own shares an engine that way.

So, if he joined a syndicate, he could have shares in a much larger engine, it would be looked after by the group and it could be based at any one of a number of preserved railways and it could go visiting.

"But that's just the thing, old bean. It means he can't start right away. Probably for not at least six months. By then the fact that the golf course is in danger of being sold off for development might give his jolly little grey cells something else to think about." Bertie shrugged.
