Bertie Buys an Engine

RPG mess abouts. A place to be creative

'You've suggested a man goes to see my mother about what?' Algy said blankly upon Bertie's return. 'Did you not take to him? There must be easier ways of getting rid of him than sending him to my mother.'
'Major Bigglesworth' said Von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"If that phone call is my mother, tell her I'm out" said Algy.
But no, it was for Bertie.
Algy's mother was so pleased that the railway man had called, she had wanted a garden railway for years, after being taken to see the one at Eaton Hall, the one Sir Arthur Heywood had built for the Duke of Westminster in 1898.
Could Bertie come up and advise her ...
Algy was consumed with an attack of supressed laughter, until Bertie - having received a resigned nod giving him permission for a bit of extra leave - said that he would pop up, and try and bring another one of his railway friends, one who was more of an expert on those minimum gauge lines.

Algy kicked Bertie on the ankle, hard.

'But he's really busy at work and won't be able to visit. Only one of us can take leave at once,' Bertie finished, in a higher voice that the one he'd started in.
'Major Bigglesworth' said Von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"I'll give you a call, when I've got hold off Douglas Ferreria, and can get him away from the line he manages in Cumberland

Bye for now"

Bertie turned on Algy intending to say something. But Algy tried to look innocent, and then said "you know Mother's been after an estate railway for years, I am surprised that she hasn't tried to get Pater to talk to the Scotsman who runs that outfit in Portmadoc"

[Note: using the spellings from the 1960 / 1970s][not the Cumbria I put by mistake, blame being tired]

(Shouldn't we be in Cumberland in 1962?).

'What are you going to build in the garden?' Algy demanded. 'And why my garden and not yours?'

[Sorry, yes it should be Cumberland, my bad - will edit in a minute ]

It is your mother that wants the estate railway - and I might copy the layout at Chedcombe if it will fit, otherwise I'll doodle my own layout ! Bertie retorted.

'Maybe your father will turn out to have a secret desire to be a fireman on the footplate,' Biggles suggested. 'Or perhaps it's your mother who has had a long-standing ambition to drive a train.'

"No," Algy declared. "It's more than likely because the Duchess of Rutland has one and she feels the need to go one better."

Bertie declared that he was going to the RAF club for dinner, he needed to think about what Algy's mother wanted, what the various people had said and both of his own potential railway sites.

Just as he went to get his coat, he asked Biggles if he should fly or drive up for the visit - he could get to and from Llanbedr easily enough, and they could overfly that area around The Long Mynd as they needed a record of the gliding club's new hangers.

Bertie weighed up the long drive against being dependent on taxi drivers and the goodwill of Algy's mother.

'You may have a point,' he admitted.

So before he went to the club he checked the Jag had a full tank of fuel and the other bits and bobs that were needed to make sure you didn't have problems on the way.
He made a mental note to check first thing in the morning with one of the long distance traffic guys what the A5 was like for road works and the like, and tried to decide just how early he was going to leave.

First of all, Bertie calculated when the cows were likely to be milked. He did not want to be driving on rural Welsh roads at that time of day. He disliked having to come to sudden halts as herds of cows on the way from their fields to their farmyards were swaying up the roads.

He wondered if Algy’s mother would put him in the Blue room again. It was reputed to be haunted.

He was hopeful that the fire would have been set going, to air the room.
The weather had been fine, but not warm for the last few days -
Algy's mother would not want the reputation of being stingy towards guests and friends of family members, especially ones she wanted help from.

Bertie was lucky in avoiding cattle and unlucky in the temperature of his room. Merioneth had an antiquated heating system which rarely made more than a degree or two of difference to the ambient temperature and Algy's parents were long inured to the cold. Bertie remembered why Algy lived in London and visited as infrequently as possible.

Bertie decided he wasn't going to stay above two days. That should be enough, he hoped, to get Lady Lacey to tell him her plans. Someone else could follow it up.

Bertie cast a look out of the window. It was raining. He hoped Lady Lacey wouldn't insist on waiting for a dry day to show him what she wanted. He could be stuck here for weeks.

Bertie was heartened by this. It was a most promising start. Hopefully, a lot could be done without going outside. It all depended on how good the maps were.

Lady Lacey had some interesting plans, especially for the height of the track, designed to give her a panoramic view over much of the nearby countryside. And her neighbours.
