Algy and his Broomstick

Algy and his Broomstick

Postby Kismet » 14 Mar 2018, 00:38

Algy had flown many things over the years, but the one he had enjoyed most, the thing that encapsulated the very essence of flying for him, was a broomstick. He had only flown one very briefly but it was an experience he was determined to repeat. Unfortunately, the only person he had ever met who gave lessons in flying broomsticks had moved and left no forwarding address.

Patiently, Algy tracked her down until he had not only her new address but the date she was starting her next flying class. With great commonsense, he didn't tell her he was wanting lessons but turned up on the night and skulked in the shadows whilst she gave her initial lecture and an assistant collected the course fees. Only when the besoms were being handed out did Algy step into the light.

'Hello, Megan,' he said cheerfully. 'Heard from Hecate recently?'
'Major Bigglesworth' said Von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Megan paused briefly and then turned her beaming smile onto Algy. "No. I think she must be sulking. It's good to see you, by the way.i had a premonition this morning."

'A nice one I hope,' grinned Algy, clasping his broom with both hands. He hoped they'd start flying soon. He couldn't wait to try to loop the loop again.

"Be careful," Megan warned, "these are the next generstion of brooms. There are subtle differences, which you will probably notice."

Megan instructed them to sit sidesaddle on their brooms. Algy found his balance easily, smug that he'd remembered to put on padded underpants to make his experience more comfortable. Not everyone had thought to do so from the groans he was hearing.

The man grunted. "That's my wife over there." He nodded his head at a rather coarse female dressed in leggings far too small for her and clogs which Algy knew would drop off if ever she managed to get her broom a few feet into the air.

Algy nodded. He wasn't too sure what homeopathy was, other than it was nothing to do with flying broomsticks. 'Does that interest you?' he ventured.

The broom tried to rearrange where it connected with the man, who made a strange noise. Algy turned away to hide his laughter.

Megan got them to line up so they could watch her demonstrate how to take off. "We're just going to lift ourselves about six inches off the ground," she explained, suiting the action to the words. "We'll see how you get on with that first."

She looked hard at Algy.

'Six inches, Algy,' she warned. 'That's yay high.' Megan demonstrated with her hands. 'Six inches. Not six feet or six yards or six metres or six fathoms or any other six.'

Megan looked hard at Algy, but Algy wasn't going to do anything to disrupt his flying lesson yet. Low level flying was a rush, anyway.

He had no difficulty with the six inches and could, he knew, have gone a lot higher, but Megan had her eye on him, so he refrained. It was obvious he was in a beginners class and he didn't want to be thought of as showing off.

'Going widdershins, slowly circle the tree in the centre of the field,' Megan ordered. 'Slowly means walking pace or less, Algy.'

She then split the class into two, according to the skills of the person. Algy found himself with three others, who he had heard Megan caution against going higher than her permitted height.

Megan clicked her fingers and a number of candles lit themselves, illuminating two obstacle courses on opposite sides of the field. One was much bigger than the other.
'Practise flying round the withies and keep an even height over all the obstacles,' Megan told them. 'I'll help the larger group, but I'll be keeping my eye on you.' She looked hard at Algy and his group. 'Try not to hurt yourself falling off.'

Megan didn't dignify this with a reply but turned to supervise her beginners. Algy and the other three began slaloming round the obstacle course, going in between the withies and up and down over the obstacles. Soon they grew confident and built up speed. Quite considerable speed.
