Most could only manage a few bites of their piece.. Henry wondered if it could be put in the coffee.
"It would certainly improve it, I must admit," Biggles agreed.

'The tablet or the coffee?' Algy asked wryly.
'Major Bigglesworth' said Von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Let's try it," Henry suggested and beckoned to a steward.

The addition of a substance which was mainly sugar, held together with condensed milk and butter and flavoured with whisky, improved the coffee immeasurably.

"Put the rest away, Ginger, " Biggles ordered, when they had each had two cups of coffee. "And bring it again tomorrow night."

Ginger spent the rest of the evening composing a thank you letter to Fiona and telling her how much he missed her.

Biggles spent the rest of the evening wondering how he could possibly take the edge off his Officer's boredom. They needed action, but Jerry wasn't supplying it. Perhaps a sports day? He ran this past Algy, who suggested seriously that they should put everyone into teams, get them to build a chair out of what they could scrounge, and have races around the runway.

Biggles shuddered. Was he the only person who could predict the consequences of chair racing? Biggles bent his mind to other ways of distracting his officers.

"First Aid training," He suddenly announced. "We can get the St John bods from the village."

"Don’t think much of that," was Algy's only remark.

Biggles did not sleep too well, so he was pleased when his batman brought him some tea the next morning and the day had dawned well. The squadron was still on Standby, so with solving the potential boredom problem which was still on his mind, he went to wake Algy up and got him to come back to his room.
They carried on with their discussion over their tea.

After breakfast, Algy suggested that they tried to get an ENSA visit, or failing that, try for some amateur dramatics / music hall acts ...

In the end, Toddy came up with an idea that would need little preparation and some planning. He agreed to set up an exercise, mainly map reading and observations to answer questions at a series of check points. Initially, confining it to the base and the village of Rawlham would be easiest - provided the local Home Guard could be persuaded that no-one was spying ! They would divide the station personnel into teams, and do it competively.

Biggles accepted the offer gratefully, just as the Corporal of the guard walked in, bearing another parcel which had been handed in at the gate.

This one was neatly done up with new brown paper and new string, like most of the others.
There were no identifying marks that Biggles, Algy or Toddy could see on the outside.

Biggles looked at the other two "Any bets as to the contents ?"

'At what point do we have to investigate if these are Black Market rations?' Toddy asked, looking at the parcel.

"We don't," Biggles immediately said. "Anything that went into this could have been obtained legally but hoarded. " He was perhaps stretching a point and he added "And besides, that's not our job."
