Have Your Cake and Eat It

RPG mess abouts. A place to be creative

The regulations were harder to learn than Ginger anticipated. The language used wasn't easy for him to remember. There were no rhymes or other mnemonic devices to help him memorise the exact words.

After an hour, he realised that he had mixed up two passages and learned them incorrectly.

The next morning, he could barely get out of bed. He ached all over. Somehow he managed to get dressed. He looked out of the window to see a thick blanket of fog. At least he wouldn't be flying, he thought with relief.

Unfortunately, it wasn't filing Toddy needed. Paper was a scarce commodity and a whole new page couldn't be justified when there were only a few words to be changed. Ginger was handed slips of paper which he had to glue onto the page at the correct position. It was very fiddly, tiresome work.

Biggles saw him in the hallway, leaning against the doorframe for support and frowned with worry. He shouted for Doc Lorton.
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

Unfortunately, it wasn't Doc Lorton, but the Base Doctor who came. Biggles was sure that he was a good doctor but his Scottish accent was so thick it was difficult to understand what he was saying. Maybe, reflected Biggles, that was why he had stayed in Scotland instead of being posted elsewhere. Noone else would be able to understand the man.

The result was that Ginger was pronounced as having caught the flu. He was sent to sick bay with a demand to know how many more people he had sneezed over.

He was eventually allowed to be tucked up in bed and fell asleep. As a result, he missed the arrival of a tin 'from the ladies of Ballinbruach, wirh our profound thanks for your efforts in defeating the enemy'. It was fortunate that Biggles intercepted it for the aroma that was coming from it gave an idea of its contents and the guard who had taken it in charge was reluctant to let it go even though it was clearly labelled for the English airmen.
