Have Your Cake and Eat It

RPG mess abouts. A place to be creative

Symthe was a stickler for regulations, so that meant another problem to overcome, but the Anson still seemed the best idea, especially as it seemed most of the trucks had already left.

Taffy then had a horrible thought, in his desire to get to Rawlham, he was ignoring Ginger, who would be left on his own, and probably get into trouble over his (Taffy's) escapades.

Taffy looked at Ginger, lost in a beatific dream opposite. Who was he kidding? Ginger wouldn't even notice he was gone.

That settled it. A love-struck Ginger was more than he would be able to stomach.

Taffy made a note of who had been to see him and who hadn't. He'd get the gen he needed about times from his next visitor.

He realized he was only wearing a hospital gown. Hm.. This presented additional difficulties. Surely his uniform was around here somewhere...

Another thing for his next visitor to help him with, Taffy decided. Although if push came to shove, he'd get out in his birthday suit.

This, however, was not necessary. He convinced Tex that the hospital gown was undignified and persuaded him to get his best pIr of pyjamas from his room.

He managed, with a bit of help from Tex to get changed, and walk about the small ward - without (or so he thought) attracting the nurse's attention. Ginger watched carefully.

Taffy looked across at Ginger a little guiltily. Ginger wouldn't snitch on him, he knew, but there was something that was stopping Taffy telling Ginger what he was going to do.

Mostly it was because Biggles seemed able to read Ginger like a book, and if Ginger knew the truth, he wouldn't be able to keep it a secret for long, despite his best intentions.

But it was also that Ginger wasn't his usual, lively, interested self and Taffy wasn't sure how he'd react to anything anymore.

He was obviously still ill, and, Taffy thought disgustedly, a little love-lorn. Probably unpredictable.

Taffy settled down for the night, planning his move. Tex had told him where to stand and he would make sure a truck was there at the same moment as the diversion took place.

About an hour after everyone not on duty had settled down to sleep, there was an air raid - at least the sirens went off and everyone tumbled to their action stations.

The sick bay came to life, with some quick movements of the doctor and nurses. The orderlies came to move Taffy and Ginger to the air raid shelter out back, they waited for the signal an actual attack was in progress. Nothing happened for a long time, then the all clear was sounded.

Biggles and the others were scrambled, along with their host Squadron. It proved to be a false alarm, but for two hours they were up in the air, patrolling, keeping an eye out for bombers who weren't there.

Eventually, they landed safely back at the base and the ground crews refuelled and re-armed all the planes (several pilots had warmed their guns "just in case").

Finally, everybody was able to get back to bed.

Taffy wondered if the plans for the morning were still on, or not, as he and Ginger settled down again.

Of course they were. Biggles wasn't one for letting a little thing like a disturbed nights sleep from carrying out his orders and returning to Rawlham.
