Biggles' Squadron and the Annual Medical

The referee for this match had broken his spectacles during the previous one. Bertie and Taffy wondered what difference this would make.
'Major Bigglesworth' said Von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

They soon found out. It didn't take the opposition long to capitalise on the Ref's shortsightedness. .

They were down 10 - nil before they discovered how suggestible and snobbish the ref was.

'Really,' said Bertie, 'I do think that chappie was offside, what?'

'Really, Lord Lissie?' said the ref. 'Penalty, 666.'

Henry managed to score under the posts whilst everyone else was distracted arguing whether they were playing advantage, and if they were, whose advantage. One of the opposing team muttered something about the ref being blind. There was nothing wrong with his hearing, though, and after that six decisions in a row went 666's way.

The match was a draw, 16 all.

They had a little time to wait before their next match. Biggles noticed Dora trying to hide behind Angus.

'What's wrong?' he asked her.

Dora smiled, rather vindictively. 'My brother's playing for our next opponents. He doesn't deal with surprises well. Let's not let him see me until we go onto the field.'

Biggles looked over and saw Taffy and Bertie with their heads together. Bertie looked up and beckoned to Dora to join them.

"On you go," Biggles grinned. "They want to talk tactics."

'Why do you want to do your brother down?' Bertie asked. 'Family ties and all that.'

Dora looked at him.

'Ever since I can remember, my big brother has used me to practice his rugger skills. My earliest memories are of him learning to tackle me. Then it was passing skills, fishing the ball out of an icy beck at the bottom of the garden whilst he and his friends practiced kicking, throwing the ball into their line outs, anything they wanted to improve. Then they discovered I was good at analysing matches, and I had to attend every single one and tell them what they needed to work on and provide a strengths and weaknesses balance sheet for their opponents. They even fished me out of hospital once when I broke my leg playing hockey to take me to a pre-season warm up match.
I have more England caps than him, and he refuses to take my sporting abilities seriously. I want to annihilate him in this match and show him once and for all who the better sportsman in our family is.'

They managed to keep Dora's presence on the team a secret from her brother until they walked onto the pitch to start the match. She was quite right. He didn't respond well to surprises and the sight of his sister was a most unwelcome one.

Dora watched in satisfaction as she saw her brother's face. Taffy 'accidentally' let slip to an opponent that Dora was Schofield's kid sister.

This was unexpected. But the recipient of the ball, streaking down the field, was blind in one eye. Surely he couldn't see if he was approached from his blind side?

The problem was that he was staying close enough to the line that no one could approach him on his blind side. And he was quick. He'd touched down before Schofield's side had quite worked out what to do.

It soared over.
The next scoring opportunity came from a scrum. Biggles dummied it left to Toddy, Scofield's centres fell for it, Biggles flung it right to Dora and her brother wasn't able to stop her from going over the line.

Doc Lorton took this one. He misjudged it. It bounced off an upright, hit the crossbar, bounced back to the upright, just glanced off, and dropped over the other side.

A few minutes later, Schofield' looked at his mate in disgust. "What's wrong with you? You let Dora walk away with that one."

"She's a girl," his friend said in defence. "And your sister."

Schofield's side got their act together and began to apply pressure on the weaker positions in the 666 team. Bertie and Taffy and Dora made tackle after tackle. Doc Lorton remained calm under the pressure and booted the ball away into touch. Neither side had scored again by half time.

Schofield himself, inscensed by what he saw as his sister’s treachery to the family name, hated after her himself. He brought her down with a most unbrotherly tackle and skidded a few yards with her and the ball under him.

Schofield protested that Dora had not placed downward pressure on the ball. The referee disagreed. The ball was most definitely under Dora when it crossed the line and therefore very much under pressure.

For a moment it looked as if Donald Schofield, currently the most capped English player, was going to be sent off for arguing with the ref, but he managed to control himself. Doc Lorton kicked the conversion, and against all the odds, 666 squadron were ahead.
