The second half was a grind. Both sides made their tackles and managed, somehow, to cover the gaps in their defences. A thin, cold rain began, making the ball greasy and the players miserable.

The scrum was half-hearted. Biggles was flattened and trod on several times. with only three minutes to go, 666 were behind by 4 points.

The ball came out of the scrum and Biggles threw it to Dora. She looked as if she was enjoying herself, which Biggles resented very much.

She jinked around one man, handed another off and sprinted for the line. Bertie managed to stay with her in support.

He jinked himself, to prevent one of the opposition from reaching her.

"Foul!" The opposition called. The referee blew the whistle a fraction of a second after Dora touched down.

Doc Lorton converted and 666 were 3 points ahead!

Schofield's side started to get a bit desperate and gave away 3 penalties in quick succession.

The final whistle blew. 666 were through to the final. Bertie and Taffy were jubilant. Biggles went to see how Hollingswell was faring.

Extremely well, was the answer. Hollingswell was still hardly daring to speak, but he was showing his opponents a clean set of heels. Biggles was very pleased.

The various other Squadron members taking part were holding their own, just. Biggles began to wonder if he had neglected the Sports side of things and made a mental note to do something about it after today.

Perhaps they could get a billiards table and get their exercise walking around that as they played a few games.

Biggles resolved to look into the costs. Or maybe the other ranks would like to play soccer and it was only pilots who disliked exertion?

The 701 station adjutant, like Wilks wrapped up in a warm greatcoat and happy that his playing days were over, recognised Dora.

'I say, isn't that Donald Schofield's sister?' he asked Wilks. 'I've seen her often enough at matches.'

Biggles slid away and reluctantly warmed up on the field.
